What started as a personal passion for quilting has grown into a love for helping others complete their quilting journeys. I believe every quilt deserves to be finished beautifully. Quilting is more than just putting layers together – it's about honoring the time and love you've poured into every piece. That's why I treat every quilt like the treasure it is.
Harvest Moon Quilting Co. began as a bright and colorful idea in the back of Chalyse’s mind. She loves colors, patterns, texture and combining them into pleasing works of warmth and love. What could be better than creating a “gift of self” for your loved one or for donation to a worthy cause. Everyone in the world could use such a gift!
As she got further into her own sewing and piecing adventure, she imagined the joy and satisfaction of finishing the quilt top with beautiful quilting stitches which would enhance and complement the work of art. Chalyse looked into domestic machine quilting, mid arm quilting on a tabletop and then discovered the longarm and was absolutely smitten! Encountering all the incredible design possibilities for semi and custom quilting available on a longarm sealed the dream. She went on a hunt for the perfect machine…and found her!
In the dead of a dreary winter, Birdie the Bernina Longarm was lovingly and carefully transported to her new home at Harvest Moon Farm. She is now the center gem of Harvest Moon Quilting Co. and is eager to turn your pieced work into a finished, useful and beautiful addition to your life! Chalyse and “Birdie” invite you to stop by and see what we can do to help you finish your quilting creations!
We require that backing be at least four (4”) inches larger on all sides of the quilt top. Add 4 inches to each side of the top measurements, or in other words, a total of 8 inches to the width and 8 inches to the length of your quilt top. For example, if your quilt top is 60”X70” please ensure that your backing is at least 68”X78”. If your backing is NOT the right size, we may be able to make it work for an additional fee, or it may not be quiltable on the longarm at all. If your quilt uses minky, see the next FAQ.
Is there anything more comfy than a minky backing? We LOVE how soft and cuddly minky and cuddle backs are, they’re irresistible. To make minky and cuddle work, we need 5" inches on all sides (10” inches total for both width and length, see above). 1” seams and horizontal please!
We currently offer a large assortment of Superior Omni thread color choices. Omni is a strong, bright, poly-wrapped, poly core thread that is extremely durable and works wonderfully on the longarm! It comes in 172 colors and we sometimes are just plain googly-eyed when looking at our thread racks! We also carry over 100 variegated thread color combos–because sometimes one thread color just isn’t enough! We love to help match colors and know that the right thread can really tie together the many elements of your piece and make your quilt pop!
Yes and no. I don’t do free-motion custom quilting–YET!!! Practice makes perfect and I’m still practicing, so stay tuned! In addition to all-over computerized (commonly referred to as Edge2Edge) quilting, I do offer semi-custom computerized work that can bring your quilt up to next level awesomeness!. This option includes borders, corners or special blocks or areas with a different pattern than the chosen overall edge2edge design. Let’s meet and design your quilting together and enhance your pieced work!
Here at Harvest Moon Quilting Co. we are pleased to be the home of Birdie the Bernina Longarm. She’s 12 feet long and 4 feet wide–just saying, she’s a BIG girl! She can handle up to a 110” quilt top and makes beautiful stitches. She’s currently equipped with nearly 800 patterns and loves to collect new ones!
To calculate square inches:
Measure the quilt top length and width. Multiply length by width.
Example: 70W x 80L = 5600 Sq inches
To calculate linear inches for binding measurement:
Measure quilt top width & length. Add width + length, multiply by 2.
Example: 50W + 60L = 110 x 2= 220 Linear Inches
*Remember to add an additional 10+ inches when creating your binding to allow for positioning and joining!
